Samsung Galaxy S4 will be shipping with Snapdragon 600 in the United Kingdom

Originally Samsung’s new flagship the Galaxy S4 was intended to ship with Samsung’s very own Octa Core Exynos 5 CPU in the United Kingdom. However later after some confusion Samsung officially confirmed that people in the United Kingdom will be getting the Galaxy S4 powered the Snapdragon 600 processor instead. When later contacted by Pocket Lint regarding this matter Samsung replied by saying ‘Samsung Galaxy S4 is equipped with a 1.9GHz quad-core processor or a 1.6GHz Octa Core processor. The selection of application processor varies by markets, In the UK. In the UK the Galaxy S4 will be available as a 4G device with a 1.9GHz quad-core processor.”  disappointing as that may be the chipset designed by Qualcomm should also offer similar performance, enough to defeat most of the other flagships out there. According to some official the new chipset’s offer almost 30% more performance over its predecessor and also consumes less power, so it should be more than enough for most users out there. Not to mention in real life usage you will barely notice any difference unless you intend to benchmark and compare your phone with its competition at a regular basis, also keep in mind that we don’t yet know how the Octa Core Exynos 5 CPU performs, so it might turn out to be a good decision after all. However for those intend to get a Galaxy S4 that is powered by the Octa Core Exynos 5 CPU and won’t settle for anything else, they can just simply order an international version that won’t be bound by any  particular carrier.

Nokia Triumphs over HTC

Reportedly Nokia is suing HTC for approximately 22 cases in Germany, so yes after witnessing the many cases between Apple and Samsung we are now going to see yet another battle, only this time between HTC and Nokia. The first of them has already come to an end with Nokia on top, the court has rules that HTC used a batter saving patent that was originally owned by Nokia. After the decision was made Nokia released an email statement saying that they are please with this decision and confirms the quality of Nokia’s portfolio. For those of you wondering this power saving patent refers to the technology where battery power is saved when connected to a network, when connected this technology monitors the power consumption by the network and adjusts accordingly therefore providing better battery life. HTC also replied regarding this decision and said that it would appeal the judgment while also progressing efforts to have the patent declared unacceptable by the German Federal Court and also the English Patents Court. Shorty after the reply from HTC Nokia replied by saying that it has also asserted the same power saving patent against HTC in both UK and at USA’s international Trade Commission and also informed that the next hearing will take place in the United States and will start in two months time.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 will use PowerV4 SGX 544 GPU

So far the details we knew about the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been nothing short of impressive, but there weren’t much legitimate information about the graphics processing unit that it’s going to use. Today Imagination Technologies finally announced that its PowerVR SGX 544 graphics is going to be used in Samsungs upcoming flagship the Samsung Galaxy S4. Below are the official details about the PowerVR graphics technology.

PowerVR Graphics Technology:

The PowerVR graphics processor (GPU) family continues to lead the market in technological capability, roadmap strength and ecosystem, and remains by far the most adopted and shipped technology of its kind. Many designs across PowerVR Series5/5XT and our latest Series6 family are at different stages of delivery, with increasing numbers of both Series5XT and initial Series6 based SoCs entering production and contributing to volume ramp-up. The Series6 IP core family expanded to six members, with the recently launched G6100 offering the smallest and most efficient GPU with OpenGL ES 3.0 compatibility. As well as enabling the full market adoption of OpenGL ES 3.0 with the highly scalable PowerVR Series6, we have this quarter released a set of advanced API extensions for PowerVR Series5XT, giving application processors using the technology access to some of the features of the latest APIs.

The PowerVR SGX 544 GPU is available in 2 versions so far, the three core (544mp3) and the quad core (544mp4), the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 will be using the Quad Core (544mp4) in order to insure optimal performance.

HTC One Developer Edition Announced

HTC received a lot of positive feedback for their upcoming flagship smartphone the HTC One. Their interest rate has increased a lot and analysts believe this product may turn out to be HTC’s ticket back to the group of Elites. HTC took full advantage of their new found momentum and announced a Developer Edition of the international  version, but unfortunately its going to be available for users in the United States only. The HTC One Developer Edition will ship carrier and bootloader unlocked in order to support the developers and similar to the international version it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2 Gigabyte of Ram, 64 Gigabyte of storage, Open API’s for Bluetooth Low Energy and Infrared, Front Facing Stereo speakers, two dual-membrane microphones for recording. As for connectivity the HTC One developers edition will support quad-band GSM/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band 3G with HSPA (850/1900/2100 MHz) and tri-band LTE (700/850/1900 MHz). As good as this idea may sound, we would have liked HTC to release the Developer Edition globally as well.  It’s anything but unfair to deprive countless developers that are just waiting for a factory unlocked phone so they can let their creativity run wild. Still this is a smart move by HTC, they are trying to focus on the developer side of the audience which can lead to many opportunities for them and especially in a time when their sales rate have gone down. Hopefully HTC’s new strategy will pay off and get them back on the right track.

HTC One UK Launch Delayed

HTC One_Silver_3V
HTC One has been among the most well marketed smartphone from HTC in a long time, so far their marketing strategy has been a success as interest rates have increased a lot in recent weeks. However HTC may not even be able to take full advantage of their upcoming flagships potential due to shortage of certain parts. Many well knows analysts said that this may result in delays in some regions and so far it’s proving to be right, those who were looking forward to HTC One from United Kingdom will have to wait a little longer compared to other regions in order their hands on the HTC ONE, due to some technical issues the HTC One UK launch has been delayed to March 29th.  An official spokesperson was contacted by Android Central and when asked about the delay he said “We will start fulfilling pre-orders by end March in certain markets and will roll out to more markets as we approach April” Also there have been rumours about HTC One being out of enough units to support the upcoming months and with HTC’s current financial crisis, the future of the company may depend a lot on whether or not they can capitalize with their current upcoming products.

Samsung working on an enhanced version of the Galaxy S3

Reportedly Samsung is working on an enhanced version of their current flagship the Galaxy S3. It will sport a better display, improved better life, and wireless charging. This also confirms that their upcoming flagship the Galaxy S4 will also feature wireless charging.  The new battery capacity will be an impressive 2400mah and is said to be more efficient than the original unit. However the no information on what the display of this enhanced edition will offer, but we hope that it will sport conventional RGB technology along which was sadly missing from the Galaxy S3 along with higher pixel density. This is not the first that Samsung has tried to re capture interest among mainstream users by releasing an enhanced version of their successful products. In fact Samsung is one of those manufactures that often update their old flagships with enhanced editions. The same strategy was followed when the Samsung Galaxy S and the later released Galaxy S2. They both had their plus versions that offered slightly improved features and according to the sales rate were a big success. So Samsung will probably continue this tradition of sorts with all of their flagships including the current flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4.

‘Widgets aren’t widely used’ claims HTC

Since the arrival of gingerbread the use of widgets on our Smartphone’s increased a lot. They can be a great way to access the things we want without going through the menu. Many people use widgets more than the actual application itself. But recent studies carried on by HTC tell a much different story and made them doubt about the purpose of widgets.

According to HTC majority of their users do not take full advantage of the widgets presented to them. They carried on this research while preparing for the development of HTC Sense 5. They learnt through their research that while most people use common widgets such as weather, music and clock, only a mere 10% of them use anything else. This is surprising given the number of widgets that are available for users, it was also discovered that very few people actually use the widgets that they download. Based on their findings HTC will probably try to make widgets more useful and noticeable in their new and improved HTC SENSE 5.

HTC is among the front runners when it comes to user interface. Their Sense UI is one of the most well designed interface out there and widgets has always been an important been a part of their previous interface. But their recent research has lead them to taking innovative steps such as “BLINK FEED”  which provides real time information that is only important to you thus elimination needs of multiple widgets. Honestly speaking this is a much more practical decision by HTC that makes the HTC Sense 5 anything but worse and “Blink Feed” might just turn out to be the future of home screen experience.
